Rethinking paralysis

Credit: IEEE Spectrum

What is it? Swiss neuroscientists are helping a paralyzed man walk using a brain-spine interface (BSI) that turns thought into movement.

Why does it matter? While researchers have made some progress in treating spinal cord injury and paralysis, scientists have yet to restore natural, voluntary walking motion in a paralyzed person. Gert-Jan Oskam, the man at the center of the Swiss study, says the new BSI feels much more intuitive than earlier versions. “The stimulation before was controlling me, and now I’m controlling the stimulation,” Oskam says. He can now walk more than 600 feet per day and stand for three minutes unaided.

I’ve already had characters recuperate from limb loss by regenerating limbs. Paralysis fixing is a matter of regrowing nerves. I have written some stories about people getting up from wheelchairs through nerve regrowth. Check out this short story:

Assisted Living

Oops! My SciFi
Almost Science Fiction

by Andy Zach
I need to tell you about my own zombie story. It’s about
how my parents became zombies.
As soon as the zombie turkeys appeared in Illinois, I
started cultures of their zombie turkey bacteria in petri dishes.
When other animals, squirrels, rabbits, and cows began
turning zombie, I added cultures of their bacteria. I sought the
ultimate source of animal revivification. It was my PhD thesis
and my life’s work.
I’ve always wanted to revive animals from the dead. It
seemed the secret was through the special bacteria for each
species. Naturally, when humans became zombies, I cultivated
their bacteria too.
That’s where this story starts. My parents were in an assisted living home, and I brought them to my house for a
family reunion. Like all reunions, the house was filled with sisters, brothers, aunts and uncles, and food. Lots of good
Greek food—gyros, moussaka, and of course, lots of ouzo, the Grecian licorice liquor. We also had cold cuts and a sandwich bar for the in-laws who didn’t do Greek. The trouble began at the bar.
My father, Giorgos “Gyros” Zacharias, loves Vegemite vegetable spread. He usually ate it on whole-wheat bread. He
acquired the taste while traveling in Australia for his import-export business. That was also where he got his nickname,
“Gyros.”

Assisted Living – continued

We had whole-wheat bread, but somehow my wife and I neglected to stock up on Vegemite.
“Anastasios?” he asked me as he pushed his walker toward me.
“What, Dad?”
“Where’s the Vegemite?”
“Oh, sorry about that. I forgot to get it.”
“That’s okay. I’ll just look around for it.”
“I don’t think you’ll find any.”
“You’ll be surprised. I’m good at finding things.”
I was.
The next time I saw him, he was dancing the sirtaki on the patio while playing the “Zorba’s Dance” on his bazouki, a
Greek mandolin. He eyes glowed bright red.

“Dad! What happened? You’ve become a zombie!”
“Zombie? Who cares! I feel great! Dance with me, Anastasios. Opa!”

I had a great time reading Zombie Turkeys. Andy Zach creates a hysterical, fun world where turkeys are at the top of the food chain, right before Thanksgiving. Time for a little Turkey payback and the new sound of terror is gobble.. gobble.

Another winner by Andy Zach!

Unique and wonderful book for young people. Kids see a whole new side of kids with special needs. Not weird. Just kids who are facing a different sort of challenge than they are. The story is fun and believable. It kept me interested, and I’m an old lady!

A hilarious adventure

Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2022

When Lisa fires Sam, he doesn’t know what he’s going to do, for about two seconds till she tells him he has until that night to find a new career. Because he works better under the deadline and she should know because she’s his wife.

This book was one of the funniest books I have ever read. I love Simon Carr’s books and because I have brought all of his books I wanted to find a new author who was just as funny and I found him. I had no idea zombie animals with that prevalent but they are in this guy investigates the situation and when he’s hired by the government crazy things ensue.

I’d love this book and highly recommend it if you love to laugh and trust me they have giggles on every page. You can really truly tell when comedy comes natural and when they are trying too hard in this author his comedic talent in spades I cannot say enough how funny this book is and can’t wait to read the second one in the theories or at least I hope they have a second one.

I was given this book by the author in story origin but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review but all opinions are definitely my own.

Epic Fantasy Fun! I Just Began Writing One yesterday. Boy, did that feel good, to finally get started. I wrote my first scene, 700+ words.

So what’s it all about?

Do you know who Dionne Warwick is?

If you know Dionne Warwick, let me know and I’ll give you a free book.

Epic Fantasy Fun – The Premise

I have working title for my next book. It may or not stick. If you got a better one and I use it, I’ll give you any book of mine, any format. Send your suggestions here or to [email protected].

My working title is: Magic Arrives. My premise is simple: our Earth, in 2023, becomes magical. I’ve worked out most of the rules for my magic system, but I won’t tell anyone, not even the readers of my book. I want the reader to discover how the magic works as the characters do.

ReviewPatricia McKillip practices her craft of writing fantasy at the highest level in this atmospheric depiction of a city, Ombria, rocked by the death of its regent, Royce. The mysterious and manipulative Black Dominia immediately orders his mistress, Lydea, out on the streets, presumably to die. Lydea, a beautiful former tavern wench, makes her way across the dangerous city at night to her father’s tavern. A mysterious girl, Mag, helps her.

Mag, was raised by a sorceress, Faey, who stays in the shadows of Ombria, content to sell her spells to the highest bidders–including the Black Dominia.

Ms. McKillip introduces more colorful characters, without explaining the magic they contain at all. The complex political and magical mystery continues until the end when the mystery pops like a bubble.

This is a must read for any fan of fantasy with vivid characters. (less)

ReviewFirst time I’ve read a book by James Ghoul, and I’m looking forward to the second!

Bronze Rank Brewer is a very unconventional RPG-type novel, where the main character, Hawkin, decides to embark on a brewing quest. He doesn’t want to travel; he loves his woody wilderness. He is very sociable and friendly. He befriends both a hideous, deadly monster who becomes a friend and helper and also earns the loyalty of a rejected goblin. And a goddess.

The goddess is of astral planes, not of brewing. Somehow, she thinks Hawkin will become the greatest brewer ever, and the brewing god is upset. So he sends his most trustworthy brewer to find Hawkin and find out his secret.

You will enjoy this one.
