Best 2023 April Books – Reviewed by author Andy Zach. April was a good month for books. Check out some of my favorite fantasy and SciFi.
I finished my most recent review the other day on Goodreads:
Best 2023 April Books > Ready Player One
I read this book because I finally got into RPG type novels and this one had the reputation as the first.
Andy Zach
It’s not an RPG novel like many fantasy type novels I’ve read. It’s much more a dystopian novel with a dominant RPG universe called Oasis. All the world’s society revolves around this game, invented by a pair of batty billionaires.
One billionaire retired and the other died. When he died, the revealed he had placed an Easter Egg, a hidden object in his RPG universe. All he left was a cryptic poem. Find the egg and you’ll get all his billions. People searched relentlessly, to no avail. There were three keys and three gates to be found. No one found the first key.
Then Wade came along. He was a poor kid, parentless, raised by his grandmother and obsessed with finding the egg. He researched exhaustively all the 80s trivia the billionaire loved and joined with the other grunters (egg hunters) in playing and solving old video games from the 80s.
Then one day . . .
This novel is certainly worth reading. Don’t miss it if you love RPG fiction. Or dystopian fiction. Or coming of age novels.

Space escape
Summer boredom is cured by a trip to Space Camp, which results in a trip to space. This is a fun, fast-paced elementary to mid-grade adventure story. Although it’s clear the kids have had prior adventures together, this can be read as standalone.
I liked how they combined their abilities and intelligence to solve problems and support one another. The trivia questions they ask each other are a good way to sneak in some history and facts without a lecture.
The way we get to hear the villains plotting is great. They almost steal the show.
Khai Lannor did a good job with the story as well as voicing adults and all the different kids.
